Introducing Inclusive Design for Climate Innovation: A Practitioner’s Guide

News 04 Jun 2025

Climate KIC launches ‘Inclusive Design for Climate Innovation: A Practitioner’s Guide’, a practical resource designed to transform how climate innovation programming approaches inclusivity from the ground up.

In today’s climate innovation landscape, we recognise that the most effective solutions emerge when diverse voices are not just invited to participate but are empowered to lead. Our new guidebook, developed in collaboration with our partner BopInc, provides a structured framework to embed inclusivity at every stage of programme development.

Why inclusivity matters in climate innovation?

True inclusivity extends beyond gender equality to embrace diversity across underrepresented groups. As thought leader Verna Myers notes: diversity is “being invited to the dance,” while inclusion is “being asked and able to dance.” When we design climate initiatives with inclusivity as a foundation rather than an afterthought, we unlock more innovative, sustainable and equitable outcomes.

Who is this guidebook for?

This resource is especially valuable for:

  1. Organisations supporting climate entrepreneurs and SMEs
  2. Programme designers seeking step-by-step guidance on inclusive practices
  3. Project managers who care about inclusivity but simply don’t have the tools and know-how
  4. Teams looking to move beyond surface-level diversity metrics toward meaningful inclusion

What is in the guidebook?

The guidebook provides a complete 5-step project lifecycle framework – from initiation and planning to execution, monitoring, evaluation and closure – with practical exercises that enable teams to:

  1. Understand what inclusivity truly means beyond tracking numbers
  2. Meaningfully involve target groups throughout the process
  3. Measure impact through inclusive metrics
  4. Examine power dynamics within organisations and value chains
  5. Build programmes and climate initiatives where inclusivity is intentionally designed from day one

While no programme or project can be 100% inclusive all at once, this guidebook supports the ongoing process of iteration and adaptation necessary to create truly equitable climate solutions.
